Most progressive trance artists these days are using photographs for the frontpage of their single or album. Using one of the low cost solutions online is not a great idea as those pictures are recycled and the last thing you want to see is your album cover on a cheap business site or elsewhere on the web. So it is best to source the help of a professional photographer. And it might cost a lot less than you think.
There are many photographers specialising in different types of photography, such as buildings, plants, people, once I even found a jewelry photographer that could work wonders with his lenses. For tiny pieces such as jewellery, the details are everything and they have to be captured. So this kind of micro-photography might be perfect if you are trying to capture something tiny. Great for shooting plants and animals too, which look great on album covers.
Overall you might want to combine some graphics with your main photo because unless it is 100% stunning and original the extra help from digital art is always welcome. In this competitive world there are so many artists out there that you really need to stand out in those vinyl or CD stands. Often the cover is a major factor for purchase of music so please do not ignore this when designing. You might have made some great music but if the packaging is not there you might never be able to share it with as many people as you would like to.
